EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a moment in time during the early 20th century, featuring Edward VII, the King of the United Kingdom, and his three brothers: the Dukes of Edinburgh, Connaught, and Albany. The image, taken in 1910, showcases the brothers in their traditional Highland dress, adding an air of regality and historical significance to the scene. Edward VII, born in 1841, ascended to the throne in 1901 following the death of Queen Victoria. He is depicted here in his full Scottish regalia, complete with a kilt, sporran, and sgian-dubh (a small knife worn in the hose). To his left stands Prince George, Duke of Edinburgh, born in 1865. He married Princess Mary of Teck in 1893 and became the father of the future King George V. Prince George is also seen wearing the traditional Scottish attire, with a distinctive plaid pattern adorning his kilt. Next to him is Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, born in 1850. He served in the British Army and married Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia in 1879. Prince Arthur is wearing a darker plaid, which is said to represent the MacGregor clan. The youngest brother, Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, born in 1853, is on the far right of the image. He married Princess Helena of Waldeck and Pyrmont in 1882 and later served as Governor-General of Canada from 1898 to 1905. Prince Leopold's kilt displays a bold, red plaid, which is believed to represent the Stewart clan. This photograph offers a rare glimpse into the lives of these British royals, showcasing their brotherly bond and shared heritage. It is a poignant reminder of a bygone era, when tradition and history played a significant role in shaping the lives of the monarchy and the people of the United Kingdom.
