1865 Cavell Edith Nurse Post Card Signature

EDITORS COMMENTS
Edith Cavell: A Heroic English Nurse in Wartime Belgium This poignant postcard image captures the noble and resolute visage of Edith Cavell, an English nurse who became an icon of courage and self-sacrifice during World War I. Born on December 4, 1865, Cavell dedicated her life to nursing and humanitarian work, eventually moving to Brussels, Belgium, to serve as the matron of the Berkendael Hospital. When the Germans invaded Belgium in 1914, Cavell continued her work, providing shelter and aid to Allied soldiers on the run. She also helped hundreds of soldiers escape to neutral Holland, risking her own life and that of her family and colleagues. Cavell was eventually betrayed and arrested by the Germans in August 1915. Despite being offered a pardon if she revealed the names of those she had helped, Cavell refused, stating, "I have no country. I want no country. My country is the Red Cross: the Red Cross is my country, and the nursing profession is my only loyalty." She was executed by firing squad on October 12, 1915, becoming a symbol of resistance and hope for the Allied forces. This postcard, featuring a profile portrait of Cavell, was likely produced during or shortly after the war to commemorate her heroism. The image shows Cavell wearing her nurse's cap and holding a pen in one hand, perhaps a nod to her tireless efforts to help those in need. The signature below the image reads "Edith Cavell," adding an air of authenticity to the postcard. This poignant artifact serves as a powerful reminder of Cavell's unwavering commitment to her patients and her country, even in the face of unimaginable adversity.
