EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial photograph, taken by Aerofilms in 1924, captures the expansive Earles Cement Works in Wilmington, Hull. Established in 1821 by the entrepreneurial brothers George and Thomas Earle, this pioneering cement works was one of the earliest in the United Kingdom. The industrial complex, situated beside the River Hull, was a testament to the brothers' vision and innovation. The image reveals the intricate layout of the cement works, with its interconnected network of buildings, kilns, and chimneys. The River Hull, meandering through the site, provided a vital source of water for the production process. The works were a significant contributor to the industrial landscape of Hull and the region, and over the years, they underwent numerous expansions and modernizations. By the time this photograph was taken, the Earles Cement Works had become part of the Blue Circle Industries conglomerate. However, the passage of time and the evolving industrial landscape eventually led to the demolition of this historic site. Today, the area stands as a reminder of Hull's rich industrial heritage and the pioneering spirit of its early entrepreneurs.
