EDITORS COMMENTS
November 30, 1799: Dutch Leave Holland - The British Force Embarks for England This historic print, titled "Dutch Leave Holland," depicts a pivotal moment in the Anglo- Dutch War (1795-1815) and the broader European revolutionary period. The image captures the British military forces, under the command of General Sir Ralph Abercromby, preparing to embark from the Dutch port of Rotterdam for their return voyage to England. The British had occupied the Netherlands since 1795, following the French Revolution and the Batavian Revolution that overthrew the Dutch stadtholder, Prince William V. However, the British occupation was met with resistance from the Dutch people, who sought independence and self-rule. In response, the Dutch patriots, led by General Herman Willem Daendels, launched a series of attacks against the British forces. The situation reached a critical point in November 1799, when the Dutch forces, bolstered by French support, captured several key British strongholds, including the city of Maastricht. Faced with the prospect of a prolonged and costly war, the British government decided to withdraw its forces from the Netherlands and return to England. In this print, we see the British soldiers, their belongings and equipment piled high on the dockside, as they prepare to board the ships that will carry them back to their homeland. The Dutch people, who had long endured the occupation, watch from the shore with a mix of relief and triumph. The print serves as a poignant reminder of the complex and often tumultuous relationship between the Netherlands and Britain, as well as the broader European revolutionary period and the wars that shaped the continent's modern history.
