1403 1468 Comte Dunois Gaillard Jeanne Orleans

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the enigmatic figure of Jean de Dunois, Comte de Dunois, also known as the Bastard of Orléans (1403-1468). A prominent military commander in the late Middle Ages, Dunois is most famously associated with the legendary Joan of Arc. Born illegitimately to Charles, Duke of Orléans, Dunois was raised in the ducal court and received an excellent education, becoming a skilled knight and military leader. In 1429, during the Hundred Years War between France and England, Joan of Arc claimed divine guidance and convinced the Dauphin of France to allow her to lead the French army to relieve the besieged city of Orléans. Dunois, who had been leading the defense of the city, was skeptical of Joan's claims but was impressed by her courage and determination. He joined her army and played a crucial role in the successful relief of Orléans, which marked a turning point in the war. After the victory at Orléans, Joan of Arc led the French army to several more victories, culminating in the coronation of Charles VII as King of France in Reims in 1429. Dunois continued to serve in the French military, playing a key role in the campaigns against the English in Normandy and Anjou. He was also instrumental in the negotiations that led to the Treaty of Troyes in 1420, which recognized Henry VI of England as the heir to the French throne, but was later revoked due to the French victories. This print depicts Dunois in his armor, with a determined expression and a sword in hand, reflecting his reputation as a skilled and effective military commander. The inscription below his image identifies him as "Comte de Dunois, Chevalier, Lieutenant General du Roy de France," emphasizing his high rank and military prowess. The image serves as a reminder of the complex political and military landscape of the late Middle Ages and the important role that figures like Jean de Dunois played in shaping the course of history.
