This evocative portrait captures the stern and imposing presence of Fernando Alvarez de Toledo, the 3rd Duke of Alba (1507-1582), a Spanish soldier and governor who played a pivotal role in the history of the Netherlands during the late 16th century. Born into the noble House of Alba, Alvarez de Toledo rose to prominence under the reign of Philip II of Spain, becoming a trusted military commander and diplomat. In 1567, Alba was appointed Governor-General of the Spanish Netherlands, a position he would hold for the next 15 years.
