This striking 17th century portrait captures George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham (1592-1628), an English statesman of great wealth and influence during the reign of King James I. The Duke is shown in rich attire, wearing a lace collar and a full beard that frames his pointed chin. Born into a noble family, Villiers rose to prominence under the patronage of King James I, who appointed him Lord Chamberlain and later created him Duke of Buckingham in 1617. He was eventually pardoned and returned to court, where he continued to serve as a powerful advisor until his untimely death in 1628.
