EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures Marie-Caroline, Duchesse de Berry (1798-1870), a woman of remarkable strength and determination in the tumultuous political landscape of 19th century France. Daughter of Prince Charles Philippe, Duke of Berry, Marie-Caroline was married to Ferdinand, Duke of Bordeaux, the eldest son of King Charles X. Tragedy struck in 1830 when Ferdinand was assassinated during the July Revolution, leaving Marie-Caroline a widow with three young children. Determined to secure the succession for her eldest son, Henri, Duke of Chambord, Marie-Caroline became a key figure in the royalist opposition to the new regime. Her efforts to protect her son's claim to the throne were met with resistance from various factions, both domestic and foreign. Despite the challenges, Marie-Caroline remained steadfast in her convictions, navigating the complex web of alliances and intrigues to ensure her son's eventual ascension to the throne in 1852. This evocative image of the Duchesse de Berry, with her regal bearing and piercing gaze, serves as a testament to her indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment to her family's legacy. The portrait, created during the late 18th or early 19th century, is a poignant reminder of the personal sacrifices and political maneuverings that shaped the course of French history.
