EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving captures the moment of spiritual connection between Dr. David Livingstone, the renowned Scottish missionary and explorer, and his African helpers in Central Africa. Born in 1813, Livingstone's extensive explorations of Central Africa were chiefly driven by the strength of his missionary ideals. In this image, we see him deeply engrossed in the Bible, sharing its teachings with his devoted followers. Livingstone is best known for his discovery of Victoria Falls, but his legacy extends far beyond this notable achievement. His explorations of the African continent were groundbreaking, and he played a significant role in opening up new territories and expanding the world's knowledge of the region. The year was 1873, and Livingstone was on yet another expedition, this time in search of the source of the Nile. Tragically, he would not live to see his quest come to fruition, as he died later that same year in Zambia. Despite the challenges and hardships of his travels, Livingstone remained steadfast in his commitment to spreading the word of God and improving the lives of the people he encountered. In this moment, as he reads the Bible to his African helpers, we see a testament to the enduring power of faith and the transformative impact of education and knowledge. This historical image, from the ILN (Illustrated London News) archive, is a poignant reminder of the indelible mark that Dr. Livingstone left on the world, both as a pioneering explorer and as a dedicated servant of his faith.
