Dr. Lehwess's Epic Voyage Around the World by Car: A Commemorative Tribute from Moorlake, Germany (1902) This photograph commemorates the daring and ambitious journey of Dr. Lehwess, who embarked on a historic attempt to travel around the world by car. The image, taken at Moorlake in Germany, captures Dr. Lehwess and his motor caravan, named Passe Partout, as they prepared for the next leg of their extraordinary adventure. Dr. Lehwess, a visionary explorer, set out from London with the intention of traveling via Paris, St. Petersburg, Siberia, Japan, the Sandwich Islands, San Francisco, Mexico, New Orleans, Chicago, and finally, New York. His journey was estimated to take an impressive eight months. Accompanied by a motor caravan painted in a striking yellow hue, built by the renowned French automobile manufacturers, Panhard et Levassor, Dr. Lehwess's expedition was a testament to human ingenuity and determination. However, fate had other plans. As Dr. Lehwess and his team traversed through Russia, they encountered harsh winter conditions that ultimately led to the caravan's demise. The cylinders in the engine cracked, forcing them to abandon the vehicle in a snowdrift at Gorki. Despite this setback, the spirit of adventure and exploration lived on, leaving us with the fascinating tale of Dr. Lehwess's epic journey around the world by car. This commemorative card, a piece of history from Moorlake, Germany, serves as a reminder of this daring expedition and the indomitable human spirit that drives us to explore the unknown.
