EDITORS COMMENTS
10 Downing Street, the iconic residence of the British Prime Minister, has been the quiet backwater from which great men have ruled a great empire since the late 17th century. This sectional drawing, created in 1949, offers a unique glimpse into the historic building's interior during a pivotal time in history. The illustration depicts the garden front of No. 10 Downing Street, with Nos 11 and 12 adjacent. The principal rooms of the building are labeled, providing a fascinating insight into the functions of each space. Starting from the left, we have the Official Dining Room, where important state dinners and diplomatic engagements took place. Adjoining it is the Breakfast Room, where the Prime Minister and their family would begin their day. Moving deeper into the house, we find the Cupboard, a small storage space. The Official Drawing Room follows, a grand reception area for formal receptions and meetings. The Small Drawing Room, a more intimate space, was used for private meetings and relaxation. The Boudoir, a lady's private sitting room, is next, followed by the Chancellor of the Exchequer's Drawing Room. The Housekeeper's Office is where the day-to-day running of the household was managed. The Kitchen, a hive of activity, prepared meals for the Prime Minister and their guests. The Clerical Offices and Secretaries' Offices were where the administrative work of the government was carried out. The Private Secretary's Office was where the Prime Minister's most confidential matters were handled. The Cabinet Room, a large, oak-paneled space, was where the most important decisions of the government were made. Lastly, the Chancellor of the Exchequer's Office and the Chief Whip's Office complete the tour of this historic building. This intricately detailed sectional drawing offers a rare glimpse into the inner workings of one of the most famous addresses in the world, providing a fascinating insight into the history and politics of 10 Downing Street.
