$A 22 degree ice halo around the Sun. Photograph of a 22-degree diameter ice halo around the Sun. The halo is a fairly common phenomenon, caused by the refraction of sunlight through tiny hexagonal ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. It has a bluish outer ring and a reddish inner ring.$

$22-degree halo around the Moon. Halo around the Moon. This is the common 22-degree halo, so called as its diameter extends across 22 arc-degrees of the sky. It is caused by prismatic refraction through randomly-oriented hexagonal ice crystals in the atmosphere. Although all of the spectral colours are produced, only the reddish tint of the inner edge of the ring may usually be seen.$

Haloes are formed by the refraction of the Sun's light inside tiny regular ice crystals in the atmosphere. The most common is a 22 degree halo around the Sun (inner circle), which often has two sundogs (or parhelia, white streaks) extending horizontally from its edge level with the Sun. Outside the 22 degree halo is a rarer 46 degree halo. At top is a circumzenithal arc. Those last two haloes are relatively rare, as the crystals that form them require very exact conditions in which to form.
