EDITORS COMMENTS
In this black-and-white photograph, the de Havilland Comet C.2 (XK695) of 216 Squadron Royal Air Force (RAF) soars through the sky above Lyneham, England on November 20, 1956. The Comet C.2 was a significant development in postwar aviation history, marking a new era in jet-powered aircraft and setting the standard for passenger jet design. The Comet C.2 was the first production version of the de Havilland Comet, the world's first jet-powered airliner. Its sleek, streamlined design and innovative features, such as a pressurized cabin and large windows, made it a groundbreaking aircraft. The Comet's advanced design allowed it to fly at higher altitudes and faster speeds than its propeller-driven counterparts, providing a more comfortable and efficient travel experience for passengers. The RAF was one of the first operators of the Comet C.2, using it for various roles including VIP transport and air-to-air refueling. In this photograph, we see XK695 in its military livery, adorned with the roundel and serial number of the Royal Air Force. The aircraft's powerful engines create a contrail in the clear, blue sky, leaving a trail of vapor that adds to the sense of motion and speed. The Comet C.2 was a testament to the innovation and ingenuity of the postwar era, and its influence on the development of commercial and military aviation was profound. This photograph captures a moment in history, showcasing the grace and power of this iconic aircraft as it takes to the skies above Lyneham. Charles E. Brown, a talented photographer from the Royal Air Force Museum, captured this image, preserving it for future generations to appreciate the beauty and significance of the de Havilland Comet C.2.
