The Danish-Prussian conflict arose from disputes over the Schleswig-Holstein region, which was ruled by the Danish monarchy but inhabited predominantly by German-speaking populations. The Dronning Maria and Waldemar, two former Danish warships, were repurposed as prison vessels to house the growing number of prisoners taken during the conflict. The grim conditions on board were infamous, with inadequate food, water, and sanitation leading to widespread disease and death.
