Brunel Burns Crystal Destroyed Exhibitions Sydenham 1936

EDITORS COMMENTS
November 30, 1936: The Crystal Palace at Sydenham Burns Down This haunting image captures the aftermath of the devastating fire that engulfed the Crystal Palace in Sydenham, London on November 30, 1936. The Crystal Palace, an iconic landmark of British history and a testament to the engineering prowess of the 19th century, was originally built for the Great Exhibition of 1851. Designed by the visionary Sir Joseph Paxton and later expanded by Sir Henry Bessemer and Sir Philip Sansom, the palace was a marvel of its time, with its distinctive glass and iron structure and towering central water tower. The fire, which broke out in the evening, quickly spread through the wooden interior of the palace, fueled by the dry conditions and high winds. Despite the efforts of over 1,500 firefighters, the palace was completely destroyed within hours, leaving behind only the iconic central tower. The cause of the fire remains a mystery, though it is believed to have started in the electrical system. The loss of the Crystal Palace was a significant blow to the people of London and to the nation as a whole. It marked the end of an era, and the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the Crystal Palace and its surrounding area, which would go on to become a popular tourist destination and a symbol of British resilience. This photograph, taken in the aftermath of the fire, serves as a poignant reminder of the past glory and the enduring spirit of the Crystal Palace.
