1725 Crime Goods Informer Jonathan Receiver Stolen Wild

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative 18th century print depicts the notorious figure of Jonathan Wild, the infamous thief-taker and receiver of stolen goods in London during the early 1700s. Wild, dressed in a long, flowing coat and tricorn hat, is shown with a menacing expression and a cane in hand, as he stands amidst a chaotic scene of thieves and stolen goods. The print, titled "Jonathan Wild, The Great Thief-Taker," was created around 1725 and is a testament to the complex and often blurred lines between crime and law enforcement during this period. Wild, who was born in London around 1683, rose to infamy by posing as a thief-taker, or a person who captured and turned in criminals for a reward. In reality, however, he was a prolific receiver of stolen goods, who made a fortune by selling the items he obtained from thieves. He maintained a vast network of informants and criminals, and was believed to have been involved in thousands of thefts. The print captures the intrigue and danger of this criminal underworld, with thieves and stolen goods scattered around Wild's feet. The chaotic scene is further emphasized by the wild expressions on the faces of the criminals, and the ominous shadows cast by the street lamps. The print also includes a text box in the bottom left corner, which reads "Jonathan Wild, The Great Thief-Taker, or, The Modern Bluebeard," further emphasizing Wild's notoriety and his reputation as a dangerous and ruthless criminal. Despite his criminal activities, Wild was eventually caught and hanged at Tyburn Gallows in 1725, at the age of 42. The print serves as a reminder of the complex and often morally ambiguous world of crime and law enforcement during this period, and the enduring fascination with the darker side of human nature.
