EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the distinguished and regal presence of Major-General Lord Albert "Edward" Wilfred Gleichen, KCVO, CB, CMG, DSO (1863-1937). Born into the noble German-British Gleichen family, Edward Gleichen was a prominent figure in British society as a courtier and soldier. Born on January 15, 1863, Gleichen began his military career as a lieutenant in the Royal Horse Guards in 1883. He saw active service in the Second Boer War and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) for his bravery. After leaving the military, he joined the diplomatic corps and served as the British Military Attaché in Berlin from 1902 to 1905. In 1906, Edward was created a Count by the German Emperor William II, adding to his already impressive title. He continued to serve the British crown, becoming a Member of the Order of the Bath (CB) in 1911 and a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in 1915. In 1917, he was appointed a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO). Despite his military and diplomatic accomplishments, Edward Gleichen is perhaps best known for his role as a courtier. He was a Gentleman of the Bedchamber to King George V from 1911 until his death in 1937. In this role, he was responsible for attending to the king's personal needs and representing him at various ceremonial functions. This photograph, taken in the early 20th century, captures the essence of Edward Gleichen's distinguished career and regal bearing. Dressed in his military uniform, he exudes an air of authority and sophistication, reflecting his status as a British aristocrat and military hero. The portrait is a testament to his remarkable life and contributions to British society and history.
