Children at Kingsbury Open Air Baths 1948

Swarms of children having fun in the sun at Kingsbury Open Air Baths in Harrow. Opened in 1939, it was 165 x 75 feet with a depth of 3ft 6ins to 6ft 6ins and a 10ft deep diving area all on a 1.16 acre site. Fun-filled action was displayed from two chutes, and diving training took place from two 3m and one 5m board. The toddlers were not to be missed out, having their own paddling pool to romp and splash around. Terraces and promenade area were unusually situated on the roof of the dressing rooms - originally at ground level.
Closed after 1987 or 1988 season after costs had risen to around 100, 000 a year and the season had been reduced to only 6 weeks. There was a tragic drowning of a 9 year old boy in Sept 1989, after which the pool was filled in by Brent Council. It was demolished by Jan 1994.
Today the site is full of pool rubble and grassed over.

EDITORS COMMENTS
A Blissful Summer Day at Kingsbury Open Air Baths, 1948: A Sea of Joy and Excitement This photograph transports us back to a simpler time, as we witness a vibrant scene of children reveling in the joy and freedom of a sunny day at Kingsbury Open Air Baths in Harrow, England, during the summer of 1948. The image showcases the pure delight and unbridled energy of childhood as youngsters frolic and play in the refreshing waters of the outdoor pool. Opened in 1939, Kingsbury Open Air Baths spanned an impressive 165 x 75 feet, with a depth ranging from 3ft 6ins to 6ft 6ins and a 10ft deep diving area. The pool was nestled on a 1.16-acre site, offering ample space for the throngs of children to enjoy their summer holidays. The fun-filled action at Kingsbury Open Air Baths was not limited to the pool itself. Two exhilarating chutes provided hours of entertainment, while diving training took place from three-meter and five-meter boards. Even the youngest members of the community were catered to, with a separate paddling pool for toddlers to romp and splash around. Sadly, the golden era of Kingsbury Open Air Baths came to an end in the late 1980s. The rising costs, which had reached approximately 100,000 pounds a year, forced the pool to close after the 1987 or 1988 season. The tragic drowning of a 9-year-old boy in September 1989 further hastened its demise. The pool was filled in by Brent Council in January 1994, leaving behind a sea of pool rubble and a grassy expanse where once stood a beloved symbol of community, childhood, and summer joy. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the cherished memories created at Kingsbury Open Air Baths and the enduring spirit of fun and camaraderie that defined a generation.
