1720 1788 Bonnie Charlie Culloden Defeat Hides Hiding Highlands Jacobite Jacobites Pretender Stuart
EDITORS COMMENTS
Charles Stuart, also known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, is seen in this poignant image as he goes into hiding in the Scottish Highlands following the Jacobite defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. Born in Rome in 1720, Charles was the 'Young Pretender' to the British throne, leading the Jacobite rebellion in Scotland in support of his father, James II, who had been deposed in the Glorious Revolution of 1688. The Battle of Culloden, fought on April 16, 1746, was the final confrontation of the Jacobite rising, resulting in a crushing defeat for the Jacobites. With the British Army hot on his heels, Charles went into hiding, relying on the support of loyal Jacobites and the harsh Scottish terrain to evade capture. This historical photograph, taken from the Mary Evans Prints Online collection, captures the young prince in a moment of quiet reflection, as he looks out over the rugged Highland landscape. The image evokes a sense of melancholy and determination, as Charles contemplates his future and the fate of the Jacobite cause. Despite the defeat at Culloden, Charles remained a symbol of hope and resistance for many Jacobites, and he continued to rally support for the cause even as he went into exile. He spent the next several years traveling throughout Europe, seeking allies and funding for another rebellion. However, his efforts ultimately proved unsuccessful, and he died in Rome in 1788, at the age of 67. This photograph is a powerful reminder of the complex and fascinating history of the Jacobite rebellion and the enduring legacy of Charles Stuart, the Young Pretender.
