EDITORS COMMENTS
Charles IX, King of France (1550-1574): A Regal Marriage Unites France and Austria This exquisite print captures the regal presence of Charles, Duke of Angouleme, who later ascended to the throne as King Charles IX of France, and his wife, Elisabeth of Austria, in the year 1570. Their marriage was a significant political union, forging an alliance between the powerful houses of Valois-Angouleme in France and Habsburg in Austria. Born in 1550, Charles was the eldest son of Antoine, Duke of Angouleme, and Jeanne d'Albret. His mother's lineage, as the sister of King Henry IV of Navarre, would later complicate his reign. Elisabeth, born in 1549, was the eldest daughter of Emperor Ferdinand I and Anne of Bohemia and Hungary. She was the sister of the future Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II and Archduchess Anna of Austria, who would later marry Philip II of Spain. The marriage of Charles and Elisabeth was arranged to strengthen the political ties between France and Austria. The union was sealed in the city of Munich, Germany, in 1570, where this portrait was likely taken. The couple is depicted in formal attire, with Charles wearing the Order of the Golden Fleece, a symbol of Habsburg power, and Elisabeth wearing the Order of the Annunciation, a symbol of the French monarchy. Their hands are interlaced, symbolizing their union and commitment to each other and their respective countries. Charles and Elisabeth's marriage produced seven children, including the future King Henry III of France and Catherine de Bourbon, who would become Queen of England as Catherine de Medici's successor. However, their reign was marked by religious and political turmoil, culminating in the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre of 1572. Despite these challenges, their marriage remained an essential diplomatic alliance between France and Austria until Charles' untimely death in 1574.
