Charles Boles, also known as 'Black Bart,' was an American stage robber who gained notoriety during the late 19th century. Born in England, Boles immigrated to the United States as a young man and began his criminal career as a petty thief. However, it was his daring stagecoach robberies that would make him a legend. Boles is believed to have committed his first stagecoach robbery in 1875, and over the next several years, he would rob over 28 stagecoaches without ever being caught. He was known for his impeccable manners and gentlemanly demeanor, often leaving a poem at the scene of the crime. This print captures the enigmatic figure of Black Bart, a man who defied the law and eluded capture for years. Despite the danger and the risks involved, Boles continued to rob stagecoaches, always managing to escape unscathed. He was finally apprehended in 1883, after a posse tracked him down following a particularly brazen robbery. Boles was sentenced to 21 years in prison, but he continued to maintain his air of mystery and charm, even behind bars.
