EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures Cetewayo, also known as Cetshwayo KaMpande, the legendary Zulu king who ruled from 1873 to 1879. The photograph was taken in the year 1877, a pivotal moment in Zulu history when the king began to fiercely oppose the British annexation of the Transvaal. Born in 1826, Cetewayo ascended to the throne following the death of his father, King Mpande, in 1872. Initially, he maintained a peaceful relationship with the British, even allowing them to establish a trading post in his kingdom. However, when the British announced their intentions to annex the Transvaal, Cetewayo saw this as a threat to his sovereignty and the independence of his people. In 1877, Cetewayo led his army in a series of battles against the British, marking the beginning of the Anglo-Zulu War. Despite initial successes, the Zulu forces were eventually defeated, and Cetewayo was captured by the British in 1879. He was exiled to the Cape Colony, but was later allowed to return to his kingdom in 1882. This photograph of Cetewayo, taken during the year he began his resistance against the British, shows the king wearing his elaborate royal regalia. The intricately designed head dress is adorned with an abundance of colorful feathers, symbolizing his power and status as a leader. The image is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Zulu people and the indomitable spirit of their king during a time of great upheaval and change.
