EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Catherine I of Russia: The Unconventional Queen". This portrait depicts Catherine I of Russia, born Ekaterina I Alexeyevna, who defied the conventions of her time to ascend the throne as the second wife of Tsar Peter I. Catherine, a Lithuanian laundry-maid, seized the opportunity to seize power upon Peter's death in 1725, exploiting the complex laws of succession. Born in 1684, Catherine's life began humbly as a servant in the household of Sophia, the sister of Tsar Peter. Her charm and intelligence soon caught the eye of the Tsar, who made her his mistress in 1698. In 1707, Catherine became Peter's second wife, and they had five children together. Upon Peter's death in 1725, Catherine's position as the mother of the heir apparent, Tsarevich Alexei, gave her the leverage she needed to claim the throne. She was crowned Empress of All Russia on January 22, 1725, and ruled until her death in 1727. Despite her humble beginnings, Catherine was a bawdy and amiable woman, beloved by her people. Her reign was marked by relative peace and stability, as well as a focus on improving the lives of the common people. Catherine's rule also saw the continuation of many of Peter's reforms, including the modernization of the military and the expansion of the Russian Empire. This image, a testament to Catherine's unique story, captures the spirit of a woman who defied the odds and left an indelible mark on Russian history.
