The Castle Howard Reformatory, Welburn, North Yorkshire, was established in 1855, making it one of the first such institutions. The reformatory chapel is at the centre of the view. In 1933, it became an Approved School known as Castle Howard School for Boys. Reformatories could house convicted juvenile offenders aged under 16 for a period of 2 to 5 years
