EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the regal presence of Carol I, the first king of independent Romania, as he proudly dons his military regalia in 1914. Born on November 19, 1839, in Coburg, Germany, Carol Eitel Friedrich was the eldest son of Friedrich August II, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. In 1856, he was appointed as a military officer in the Austrian Army, where he served with distinction. Carol's connection to Romania began in 1859 when he married Elisabeth of Wied, a Romanian princess. In 1866, he was appointed as the Prince of Romania by the Ottoman Empire, and in 1881, he was proclaimed as the first king of the newly independent Romania. During his reign, which lasted until his abdication in 1914, Carol worked to modernize the country and strengthen its military. In this photograph, Carol is shown adorned with numerous military medals, a testament to his long and distinguished military career. The image captures the historical significance of this moment in Romanian history, as the country emerged as an independent nation under the leadership of its first king. The photograph also underscores the importance of military strength and leadership in shaping the course of a nation's destiny.
