EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, sourced from Mary Evans Prints Online, depicts the Canterbury Association Ships anchored in the East India Docks, London, in 1851. The Canterbury Association was a group of New Zealand colonists who sought to establish a new society based on the principles of self-government and social equality. The ships in the image, named Bangalore, Dominion, Duke of Portland, Lady Nugent, Midlothian, and Canterbury, carried over 700 passengers, primarily from England and Ireland, who were eager to embark on a new life in the Canterbury Province of New Zealand. The Duke of Portland and Lady Nugent were both brig-rigged ships, while the others were barque-rigged. The Bangalore, the largest of the vessels, measured 116 meters in length and could carry up to 600 passengers. The Dominion, Midlothian, and Canterbury were smaller, with the Canterbury being the smallest at 85 meters in length and capable of carrying 150 passengers. The passengers on board these ships were a diverse group, including farmers, artisans, and professionals, who were attracted by the promise of land grants and the opportunity to build a new society. The journey to New Zealand was long and arduous, taking approximately 90 days. Upon arrival, the settlers faced numerous challenges, including building homes, clearing land, and establishing infrastructure. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the courage and determination of the early settlers who left their homeland to start a new life in a far-off land. It also highlights the important role that shipping played in the history of emigration and the establishment of new colonies. Today, these ships are an integral part of the rich maritime history of both New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
