Battle Field Cannae Greatly Hannibal Lost Outnumbered Punic Romans Routed Wars

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th century print depicts the Battlefield of Cannae, the site of one of the most decisive battles in ancient history. The battle took place on August 2, 118 BC, during the Second Punic War, when the Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca successfully routed the Roman army, led by consuls Publius Terentius Varro and Lucius Aemilius Paullus, despite being greatly outnumbered. The Romans are estimated to have lost around 50,000 soldiers, while Hannibal's losses were a mere 5,700. The Battle of Cannae is considered a turning point in the Second Punic War and a significant military victory for Hannibal. The Romans, who were accustomed to their numerical superiority, were taken by surprise by Hannibal's tactical maneuvers and innovative use of terrain. The battle took place near the town of Cannae in Apulia, in southern Italy. This historical print offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to the ancient world and allowing us to visualize the events that unfolded on this fateful day in 216 BC. The print also serves as a reminder of the strategic brilliance of Hannibal and the costly mistakes made by the Romans, which had far-reaching consequences for the outcome of the Second Punic War. The Battle of Cannae is an important chapter in the annals of military history, and this print provides a fascinating window into the past, offering us a glimpse into the tactics, strategies, and outcomes of one of the most significant battles in ancient history.
