1509 1564 Active Calvin Flat Freeman Protestant Reformation Reformer Theological

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the intense and focused gaze of Jean Calvin (1509-1564), the influential French theological reformer who played a pivotal role in the Protestant Reformation in Europe. Calvin, born in Noyon, France, studied law at the University of Paris before turning to theology. He became disillusioned with the Roman Catholic Church and its practices, leading him to embrace the Protestant faith. Calvin's theological ideas, which came to be known as Calvinism, emphasized the sovereignty of God, the depravity of humanity, and the importance of faith and predestination. He settled in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1536, where he led a religious and moral revolution, transforming the city into a center of Protestantism. Calvin's reforms included the establishment of a Consistory, a religious court that enforced moral standards, and the creation of a system of public worship based on the Genevan Psalter. He also wrote influential theological works, such as the Institutes of the Christian Religion, which became a cornerstone of Protestant theology. Despite facing opposition and persecution, Calvin's influence continued to spread throughout Europe and beyond. He died in Geneva on August 27, 1564, leaving behind a lasting legacy that shaped Protestantism and continues to influence Christianity to this day. This portrait, with its striking detail and somber tone, offers a glimpse into the complex and profound mind of this influential reformer.
