1865 23rd Atlantic Brunel Cable Laying Starts Steam Ship Telegraph Valentia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the momentous occasion of the Great Eastern, under the command of Sir James Anderson, beginning the laying of the Atlantic Telegraph Cable on July 23, 1865, at Valentia, Ireland. The Great Eastern, designed by the brilliant engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, was a steamship specially built for the purpose of laying and recovering the transatlantic telegraph cable. The cable, which would revolutionize communication between Europe and North America, was a joint venture between the British and American governments. The image shows the Great Eastern, anchored in the waters off Valentia, with a crowd of onlookers gathered on the shore. The ship's massive winch, capable of pulling in over 1,000 tons of cable, is in operation, sending the cable down into the depths of the Atlantic. The cable, made of copper wires insulated with gutta-percha, was laid in sections, each section weighing around a ton. The successful laying of the Atlantic Cable marked a significant milestone in human history. It not only brought the world closer together, enabling instant communication between continents, but also opened up new possibilities for trade, cultural exchange, and diplomacy. The cable remained in use until it was damaged during World War II and was eventually replaced by newer, more advanced cables. This photograph is a testament to the ingenuity, determination, and collaboration of the scientists, engineers, and politicians who made the laying of the Atlantic Cable a reality. It is a reminder of the incredible progress that has been made in the field of communications technology over the past century and a half, and a reminder of the importance of continuing to push the boundaries of what is possible.
