Buried Burke Wills

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the poignant moment when the grave of Robert O'Hara Burke, one half of the pioneering Australian explorers Burke and Wills, was discovered by the search party led by Alfred Howitt in 1861. Burke and his companion William John Wills were the first Europeans to successfully cross Australia from south to north, embarking on their epic journey in 1860 with a team of 19 men and 23 camels. However, their expedition ended in tragedy when both Burke and Wills, along with several other team members, succumbed to starvation and exhaustion in the harsh outback. The search party, which included Howitt and Thomas Cockburn Park, set out to find the missing explorers and bring them back to civilization. After months of searching, they finally located Burke's grave near Cooper Creek in the arid wilderness of what is now the Channel Country in Queensland. The discovery of Burke's grave marked the end of the search party's ordeal, but it was a bitter-sweet moment for all involved. The image of Burke's grave, with its simple wooden cross and the desolate landscape stretching out behind it, serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by these early explorers in the name of discovery and adventure. This photograph, taken by an unknown photographer, is a valuable historical document that captures a significant moment in the annals of Australian exploration history. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of adventure and the indomitable human will to push the boundaries of the known world, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges.
