EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the British battle fleet in action during the early months of the First World War, as they navigated the treacherous waters of the North Sea to avoid enemy submarines. Dated to March 1915, the image shows the ships zigzagging in a coordinated maneuver, their wakes crisscrossing the water as they weaved left and right in a bid to confuse and evade the lurking submarine threat. The scene is filled with a sense of tension and urgency, as smoke rises from the funnels of the ships and the water around them is calm and still, save for the ripples created by their movements. The importance of this tactic, known as zigzagging, became increasingly apparent as the war progressed and the German U-boat campaign intensified. By altering their course in a seemingly erratic pattern, the British fleet was able to make it more difficult for enemy submarines to predict their movements and launch successful torpedo attacks. This photograph offers a glimpse into the dangerous and dynamic world of naval warfare during the First World War, as the British battle fleet worked tirelessly to protect their shores and maintain the balance of power at sea.
