EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white photograph, a British 6-inch 26-cwt (26 hundredweight) battery is seen in the midst of action during the First World War, in the Middle Eastern theatre at Samarra, Mesopotamia, now modern-day Iraq, in the year 1918. The image captures the intensity and grit of war time as the gunners, dressed in heavy greatcoats, focus intently on their task, their faces obscured by the swirling dust raised by the firing of the artillery. The six guns, each mounted on large wheels, are positioned in a semi-circle, ready to fire. The team works efficiently, with one man turning the wheel of a gun, another loading the shell, and another priming the fuse. The gun barrels are angled towards the distant horizon, suggesting the imminent release of a heavy projectile. The scene is hot and dry, with the parched earth around the battery bearing the telltale signs of the relentless sun and the passage of heavy military equipment. The 6-inch guns were a mainstay of the British artillery during the First World War, capable of firing a shell weighing 102.7 pounds (46.6 kg) over a distance of 12,000 yards (11,000 meters). The battery's presence in Mesopotamia was part of the larger British campaign to secure the region from Ottoman and German forces. The intense heat and challenging terrain made the work of the gunners all the more arduous, yet they persevered, their determination etched on their faces and in the determined set of their shoulders. This photograph offers a glimpse into the raw, unfiltered reality of war, a testament to the courage and resilience of the men who served in the field.
