EDITORS COMMENTS
Brigham Young (1801-1877) - A Pioneering American Leader: This photograph captures Brigham Young, a pivotal figure in the Latter Day Saint movement and American history. Born on February 1, 1801, in Vermont, Young became a prominent religious leader, serving as President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as the Mormons, from 1847 until his passing in 1877. Young's leadership was marked by his unwavering commitment to his faith and his role as a pioneer and settler. In 1847, he led a group of Mormon pioneers westward to Utah, founding Salt Lake City and establishing the first permanent European-American settlement in the region. He served as the first governor of the Utah Territory, overseeing the growth and development of the community. Brigham Young's tenure as the President of the LDS Church was not without controversy. He was a strong advocate for polygamy, a practice that was widely condemned by the larger American society. Young's belief in polygamy, which he saw as a divine commandment, led to numerous conflicts with the U.S. government. Despite these challenges, Young remained steadfast in his beliefs and continued to lead his followers with unwavering determination. This photograph, taken circa 1860, captures Young in his later years. His weathered face and piercing gaze speak to the challenges he faced and the resilience he demonstrated throughout his life. Brigham Young's legacy continues to be felt in the LDS Church and in American history, as a testament to the power of faith and the indomitable spirit of the human will.
