Pacificus Collection

Pacificus (Octodontidae) is a family of small mammals native to South America, and are characterized by their short, stocky bodies, long tails, and large ears. Pacificus species have adapted to a variety of habitats and can be found in the Andes Mountains, the Amazon rainforest, and even some coastal areas, and are mainly herbivorous but will also eat insects and other small animals when available. Pacificus species have been known to use their sharp claws for digging burrows in which they sleep during the day or hide from predators, and are active at night when they come out to feed on grasses and other vegetation. Pacificus species are important members of the local ecosystem as they help disperse seeds from plants that they eat as well as provide food for larger predators such as foxes or birds of prey.
