Assassinated Coptic Foreign Minister Pasha Premier Prime

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures Boutros Pasha Ghali, a pivotal figure in Egyptian history, during his tenure as the country's prime minister from 1908 to 1910. Born into a prominent Coptic Christian family in Egypt in 1846, Ghali rose through the ranks of Egyptian politics to become a key advisor to Khedive Ismail and later, Prime Minister under Sultan Abbas II. Ghali's foreign policy focused on strengthening Egypt's ties with European powers, particularly France, which angered Egyptian nationalists. His pro-French stance, coupled with his Christian faith, made him a target for assassination. On February 20, 1910, Ibrahim Nassif al-Wardani, a nationalist student, approached Ghali as he was leaving a mosque in Cairo and fatally shot him. Despite the controversy surrounding his foreign policy, Ghali's legacy extends beyond his controversial decisions. He was a champion of Egyptian education and modernization, and his efforts helped pave the way for Egypt's eventual independence from British rule. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the complex political landscape of early 20th century Egypt and the personal sacrifices made by its leaders. Ghali's grandson, Boutros Boutros-Ghali, would later make history as the first Egyptian and the first Coptic Christian to serve as Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1992 to 1996.
