Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553) was a German Renaissance painter, printmaker and designer. He was born in Kronach, Germany and apprenticed under his father who was also an artist. He later moved to Vienna where he established a workshop with his brother Hans. His works were highly sought after by the court of Saxony and he became court painter to Elector Frederick the Wise in 1505.
