EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the grim reality of the Second Retreat from Antwerp during the early days of the First World War. Taken between the 9th and 13th of September in 1914, it depicts a column of Belgian infantry and cavalry making their way down a dusty road, with horses and riders weary from the long march. The world around them is a scene of chaos and destruction, with the remnants of buildings and debris scattered in the background. The Belgian Army, outnumbered and outgunned, was forced to retreat from Antwerp after a fierce and unsuccessful stand against the invading German forces. The city had fallen on the 10th of October, and the Belgian troops, along with their French and British allies, began a hasty withdrawal towards the coast. The men in this photograph, many of them young and inexperienced, trudge along the road, their faces etched with the strain and exhaustion of the long march. Their horses, too, show the signs of wear and tear, their coats dusty and their flanks heaving from the exertion. Despite the hardships they faced, the Belgian troops remained determined to continue the fight against the Germans. They would go on to join the Allied forces in the defense of France, contributing to the eventual Allied victory in the war. This powerful image is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the soldiers of the Belgian Army during the First World War, and the indomitable spirit that sustained them in the face of overwhelming odds.
