Eruption Islets Krakatoa Neighbouring Phenomena Volcano Volcanoes Krakatau

EDITORS COMMENTS
This before-and-after comparison showcases the dramatic transformation of Krakatau and its neighboring islets, as documented in two historic maps from the 19th century. Krakatau, located in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra in Indonesia, is one of the world's most famous volcanoes due to its cataclysmic eruption in 1883. The map on the left, dated 1842, illustrates the tranquil state of Krakatau and its surrounding islets prior to the eruption. The volcano, depicted as a modest cone, is shown surrounded by a few small islets and an expansive body of water. The scene is serene, with no indication of the destructive forces that were about to be unleashed. However, the map on the right, dated 1894, tells a different story. The once-peaceful volcano has been transformed into a desolate landscape, with a large caldera now dominating the area where Krakatau once stood. The neighboring islets have also been altered, some having been obliterated entirely, while others have grown in size due to volcanic deposits. The 1883 eruption of Krakatau was one of the most powerful in recorded history, with a reported magnitude of 7.1 on the Richter scale. The explosion, which occurred on August 27, 1883, was heard as far away as Perth, Australia, and caused widespread damage and devastation in the surrounding areas. The eruption also triggered a series of devastating tsunamis, which further compounded the destruction. This intriguing comparison serves as a stark reminder of the power and unpredictability of natural phenomena, and the enduring impact they can have on our world.
