Baptist chapel in Hartlepool hit by German east coast raid - WWI

The Baptist Chapel in Hartlepool (now situated in an area called The Headland and sometimes known as Old Hartlepool), located on the corner of Baptist Street and Regent Street (with the photographer standing on Prissick Street). The chapel was built in 1852 from stone quarried in The Headland and was demolished shortly after 1914 as it was deemed beyond repair, following the attack. A new chapel was built on the site which was named the Bombardment Memorial Church to remember those members of the church who died that day killed including the Sunday school secretary and seven of the children

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures the remnants of the Baptist Chapel in Hartlepool, located on the corner of Baptist Street and Regent Street in the historic area known as The Headland. The chapel, built in 1852 using stone quarried from the local Headland, stood proudly for over six decades before it was hit during the German East Coast Raid on December 16, 1914. The attack, also known as the Hartlepool Bombardment, saw the town's coastline bombarded with over 100 shells, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The Baptist Chapel, with its distinctive bell tower, was one of the many buildings that suffered significant damage during the raid. Tragically, the Sunday school secretary and seven of the children attending the Sunday school were among the 125 people who lost their lives that day. In the aftermath of the attack, the chapel was deemed beyond repair and was subsequently demolished. A new chapel, named the Bombardment Memorial Church, was later built on the site to honor the memory of those who perished during the raid." "The photograph, taken from Prissick Street, provides a haunting reminder of the devastating impact of the raid on the community. The ruins of the chapel stand as a testament to the resilience and determination of the people of Hartlepool in the face of adversity. The photograph also serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during World War I and the enduring power of community and faith in times of hardship." "The photograph is an important historical document, offering a glimpse into the past and the impact of the raid on the town of Hartlepool. It is a poignant reminder of the human cost of war and the importance of remembering the past to inform the present and shape the future.
