EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print takes us back to the golden age of rail travel, showcasing the picturesque coastal resort of Bamburgh in Northumberland. Created by renowned artist Tom Purvis in 1936, this poster was commissioned by the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) to entice travelers to explore this idyllic destination. The artwork beautifully captures the essence of Bamburgh, with its stunning panoramic view that stretches from the sandy beach and sparkling sea right up to the majestic Bamburgh Castle towering proudly in the background. The vibrant colors and meticulous details transport us into a world where time seems to stand still. Tom Purvis was not only an exceptional artist but also a passionate advocate for elevating commercial art as a profession. In his quest for professionalization, he co-founded the Society of Industrial Artists in 1930, aiming to improve training standards for commercial artists and expand their employment opportunities. His dedication paid off when he became one of the first Royal Designers for Industry just six years later. As we gaze upon this enchanting print, we can't help but imagine ourselves strolling along Bamburgh's pristine shores or exploring every nook and cranny of its historic castle. It serves as a reminder that even amidst modern advancements, there is still immense beauty and charm waiting to be discovered in our own backyard.
