EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the joyous moment in 1912 when the island of Lesbos, located in the northeastern Aegean Sea, returned to Greek control after a prolonged period of Ottoman rule during the Balkan Wars. The image, taken at the quay in the main port of Mytilene, depicts a crowd of excited and jubilant Greeks gathered to welcome the arrival of their navy ships. The boats in the harbor display the Greek flag, a symbol of their newfound sovereignty. The Balkan Wars, which took place between 1912 and 1913, saw a series of conflicts between the Balkan states and the Ottoman Empire over territorial disputes. Lesbos, an ancient Greek territory, had been under Ottoman rule since the late 15th century. The Greek population on the island had longed for reunification with Greece, and when the opportunity arose during the Balkan Wars, they seized it. The scene in the photograph is one of triumph and relief. The people of Lesbos had endured years of foreign rule and had finally been granted the opportunity to rejoin their Greek brethren. The joyous crowd, made up of men, women, and children, is a testament to the deep emotional connection that the Greek people felt towards their ancestral homeland. The photograph also serves as a reminder of the rich history of the region and the complex political landscape of the early 20th century. It is a poignant reminder of the struggles and triumphs of the Greek people and the enduring bond between them and their homeland.
