This evocative photograph captures the joyous moment in 1912 when the island of Lesbos, located in the northeastern Aegean Sea, returned to Greek control after a prolonged period of Ottoman rule during the Balkan Wars. The image, taken at the quay in the main port of Mytilene, depicts a crowd of excited and jubilant Greeks gathered to welcome the arrival of their navy ships. The boats in the harbor display the Greek flag, a symbol of their newfound sovereignty. The Balkan Wars, which took place between 1912 and 1913, saw a series of conflicts between the Balkan states and the Ottoman Empire over territorial disputes.
