This evocative photograph captures the poignant moment of the War Cross award ceremony held in Engineers Park, Sed Dur-Bahr, Turkey on the 16th of July 1915. During the First World War, the Dardanelles Campaign was a major military operation mounted by the Allied forces to secure a sea route to Russia through the Dardanelles and the Bosphorus. The campaign, however, turned into a long and costly stalemate, with both sides suffering heavy losses.
