EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the Avro Anson T.20 aircraft, registration number WV972, as it taxies along the runway at Woodford Aerodrome on 9 February 1948. The Avro Anson T.20 was a postwar development of the successful Anson trainer aircraft, which had first flown in 1935 and served with distinction during World War II. The Anson T.20 was an important addition to the Royal Air Force's (RAF) postwar training fleet, providing advanced training for pilots and navigators in navigation, radio communication, and bombing and gunnery techniques. The aircraft was a twin-engine, low-wing monoplane with a crew of three, and was powered by two Rolls-Royce Merlin 27 engines. In this photograph, we can see the distinctive features of the Anson T.20, including its large tailfin and rudder, which provided excellent stability and control, and its rounded wings, which were designed to reduce drag and improve performance. The aircraft's cockpit is visible through the open canopy, with the navigator's position located behind the pilot and the observer/gunner's position located in the rear. The Avro Anson T.20 remained in service with the RAF until the late 1960s, making it a vital part of the postwar training program for a new generation of pilots and navigators. This photograph, taken by Charles E. Brown, provides a glimpse into the history of the RAF's training fleet and the important role that the Avro Anson T.20 played in shaping the future of the Royal Air Force.
