EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, a large assembly of Muslims, primarily from the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) of British India, gather prior to embarking on a momentous journey towards Kabul, Afghanistan in 1920. This historic event marked the height of the Khilafat Movement, an anti-colonial rebellion led by the Ali Brothers - Maulana Shaukat Ali and Maulana Mohammad Ali - following Mahatma Gandhi's First Non-Cooperation Movement of 1919. The Khilafat Movement was a response to the British government's decision to abolish the Ottoman Caliphate, a religious and political institution central to the Islamic world. Under the leadership of Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, also known as the Haji of Turangzai, these Muslims decided they could no longer live under colonial rule and chose to seek refuge in Afghanistan. The scene in the photograph is filled with a sense of determination and unity. The men, dressed in traditional attire and wearing bunting and flags of the Mahajirin (refugees), are seen gathered in a large open space. Some are seated on the ground, while others stand, their faces expressing a range of emotions from intense focus to quiet resolve. The banners and flags in the foreground bear the inscriptions of their cause, adding to the visual impact of the image. This photograph is a testament to the strength and resilience of the Khilafat Movement and its followers, who were willing to make the arduous journey to Kabul in search of a new beginning. The assembly in the photograph represents the collective spirit of the Muslim community in the region, united in their quest for religious and political freedom from British colonial rule.
