William Booth Collection

William Booth was a British Methodist preacher and the founder of The Salvation Army. He was born in Nottingham, England in 1829 to a poor family. After his father died when he was eight, Booth worked as an apprentice to a pawnbroker and later became a full-time preacher. In 1865, he founded The Salvation Army with the goal of providing spiritual and social support to those living in poverty. His work focused on providing food, shelter, clothing, education and employment opportunities for those who needed it most. He also preached against alcohol abuse and encouraged people to lead moral lives. Booth's work made him an international figure; he received numerous awards for his humanitarian efforts throughout his life before passing away in 1912 at the age of 83.
