EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Archibald Levin Smith (1836-1901) in the midst of a significant moment in Victorian legal history. Smith, who served as the 3rd commissioner in the landmark case between The Times and Charles Stewart Parnell & other Irish nationalists in 1888, is depicted here in his full judicial regalia. The image, taken in 1901, shows Smith wearing the traditional wig and gown of an English judge, as he intently reads through documents at his desk. The case between The Times and Parnell was a pivotal moment in Irish politics and press freedom. The Times had published articles critical of Parnell and his Irish National Land League, leading to a libel suit against the newspaper. Smith and his fellow commissioners were tasked with determining the truth of the allegations made in the articles. Their findings ultimately led to the downfall of Parnell's political career. Smith's role in this case, as well as his long and distinguished legal career, make this photograph a valuable historical artifact. Smith was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and called to the bar in 1861. He went on to serve as a judge of the Queen's Bench Division from 1892 until his retirement in 1901. This photograph provides a glimpse into the life of a prominent English judge during a time of political upheaval and legal innovation. The intricate details of Smith's robes, the serious expression on his face, and the solemn atmosphere of the room all contribute to the sense of history and importance that radiates from this image. It is a reminder of the vital role that the legal system plays in shaping the political landscape and protecting individual rights and freedoms.
