EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment in the history of the Austro-Hungarian Empire as Archduke Friedrich Maria of Austria (1856-1936), Supreme Commander of the Austro-Hungarian Army during World War I, stands alongside his Chief of the General Staff, Count Franz Conrad von Hotzendorf (1852-1925). Taken circa 1914, the image finds the two military leaders in full uniform, with Archduke Friedrich in an overcoat adorned with the Austrian and Hungarian coats of arms, and Conrad donning the distinctive cap and uniform of a German general. As the architect of the Schlieffen Plan, which aimed to quickly defeat France before turning the Austro-Hungarian forces against Russia, Conrad played a crucial role in the decision to go to war. However, the plan ultimately failed, and the Austro-Hungarian army suffered significant losses in the early battles of World War I. Despite this, Archduke Friedrich and Conrad remained steadfast in their commitment to the war effort, leading their troops through the tumultuous years of the conflict. The relationship between the Archduke and Conrad was complex, with the former reportedly growing increasingly frustrated with the latter's military strategies. Nevertheless, the two men remained united in their dedication to the Austro-Hungarian Empire and its people, even as the tide of the war turned against them. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the leadership and determination of the Austro-Hungarian military during the Great War, and the fateful decisions that shaped the course of European history.
