Appointed Commander-In-Chief: Admiral Sir George Callanghan (1821-1894), a historic photograph capturing the moment of his appointment as Commander-in-Chief of the British Fleet. This image, taken in 1876, shows Sir George in full regalia, dressed in his admiral's uniform, surrounded by senior naval officers and dignitaries. The importance of this moment is evident in the solemn expressions and formal attire of those present. Sir George Callanghan was a distinguished naval officer who served in the Crimean War and the Chinese Armed Intervention. He played a key role in the suppression of the Indian Mutiny, for which he was knighted in 1858. In 1872, he became Second Sea Lord and First Sea Lord in 1876, a position he held until 1880. It was during this time that he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the British Fleet, a position he held until his retirement in 1885.
