EDITORS COMMENTS
Annie Oakley, born Phoebe Annie Oakley Mozee on August 13, 1860, in Darke County, Ohio, was an American sharpshooter and the star of Buffalo Bill's Wild West show. Oakley began shooting at the age of eight, honing her skills by hitting a bottle cap at 25 yards with a rifle given to her by her father. By the age of sixteen, she was already performing in local shows, and her exceptional marksmanship soon caught the attention of Buffalo Bill Cody. In 1885, Oakley joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West show, where she quickly became a crowd favorite. She could reportedly shoot the cork out of a bottle placed on an apple held in a volunteer's hand, and she could even shoot a cigarette out of a man's mouth while he was smoking it. Oakley's performances were a thrilling combination of skill, precision, and showmanship. This photograph, taken in 1926, captures Oakley in her element, wearing her signature outfit and holding a rifle. The image is a testament to her legendary status as a sharpshooter and a performer. Oakley continued to tour with the Wild West show until 1922, when she retired from public performances. She passed away on November 3, 1926, at the age of 66. Annie Oakley's legacy as a pioneering female performer and a symbol of American frontier spirit continues to inspire generations. This photograph, taken by an unknown photographer for Garnier, is a valuable historical record of a remarkable woman and her extraordinary talent.
